From astronomical naming to an entire cosmos of brands

Since 1999, Governikus has been working to promote digitization in Germany. Back then, under the earthly name “Bremen Online Services”.

This is where our collaboration begins: the IT pioneer for security and legal commitment needs a new, more symbolic name. Together, we reach for the stars and combine the reliability of an e-government solution with the progressive thinking of a modern Copernicus.

A decade later, it is obvious that the naming system for the entire product portfolio needs an upgrade, too.

Hitchhiking through the linguistic galaxy

The IT forerunner's broad product portfolio is confusing due to many highly specialized solutions and makes orientation increasingly difficult for customers. 12 products from the current portfolio need an optimization, while maintaining the existing COM, DATA and ID category assignments. Wanted: A homogeneous overall system that matches the company values and the name Governikus.

Goal: identified. Mission: possible. First, we run a portfolio analysis for the services and solutions in a brand workshop with the Governikus team. We sort and structure. Then, we develop several alternative naming fields relating to nature, seamanship and astronomy — all in the spirit of growth and partnership.

One thing is clear early on: a nomenclature with astronomy terms performs most reliably throughout the development process. It expresses innovation, future orientation and farsightedness, providing unlimited opportunities to expand the existing spectrum of the large product portfolio linguistically in the future.

The result? Product names such as ID Mercury, DATA Varuna or COM Tauri. Reliable, visionary and likeable at the same time, they draw their consistent trajectories through the IT pioneer's naming cosmos to this day.
